No, I didn't just bond out of jail, and no I didn't just crawl out of the bottom of a bottle (before I ever make it to the bottom of one I open another). Lately, I've been getting really serious about self-sufficiency in the event of a natural or man made disaster (I'll touch more on that in a later post) and home security, including computers. It occurred to me that even though I use Truecrypt to encrypt the most sensitive data on my computer, anyone with physical access to my hard drive, some free software or insanely cheap hardware could get a lot of information from that thing.

For you folks still using Windows, Truecrypt offers pretty much all your encryption needs, including entire hard drive encryption and tons of documentation. I'm sure there are a million others available for free or fee, I just stuck with this one because it's free, cross platform, employs several encryption algorithms, offers regular and hidden containers, and can use generated keyfiles that can be stored on a flash drive in addition to passwords for extra security.

For the Linux user, entire hard drive encryption can be a little more difficult. Luckily my distro, Mandriva, is able to do this during the partitioning phase of the installation. There's about a bazillion boards for each Linux distribution and you can find help for this subject on nearly every one. What wasn't explained in the article I read was kernel updates. For days, I would DBAN my drive to DoD specs (taking about 10-12 hours), encrypt my drive, install the OS, restore my user files, set up everything like I liked it, update all packages and then get a kernel panic on reboot. Sadly, it took me many days to realize there was a conflict with kernel sources and I could not install the latest kernel source with an encrypted hard drive (there may be, I just haven't had time to delve that deep yet, I'm content that everything works now). Now that I've finally figured that out, I'm going to do some security testing on my drives and see how that works, then I'll do some half-assed regular posting soon.

Senate passes insider trading ban

Senators in both parties acknowledged the purpose of the legislation was to help dig members of Congress out from poll approval ratings that have fallen to the teens after a year of excessive partisanship pervading almost every issue before Congress.

"When polls show low public confidence in Congress, there is a strong desire to address the concerns that underpin the public's skepticism," said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, one of the bill's managers.

Do they honestly believe this little bill is going to improve their image? A congress that gave us the PATRIOT Act, indefinite detention of American civilians, that tried to foist SOPA and PIPA on us, Frank/Dodd, Obamacare, etc. etc. They're going to pass a bill banning something that was already illegal for the rest of us and they expect their approval ratings to soar?!?!?!?

Fire each and every one of these bums. Impose term limits. No more lifetime congressional benefits. Make them subject to the same laws they impose on us. We need to remember that WE hire our senators and congresspeople, WE pay their salary, therefore they take orders from US, not the other way around.

Oh, and congress? If you'd really like to boost your approval rating in a hurry, pass a bill banning executive orders and hang Eric Holder.

Family-owned craft beer brewers Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. will open a brewery in Henderson County, bringing 95 full-time and 80 part-time jobs, Gov. Bev Perdue announced Wednesday.

The deal is supported by a $1.025 million incentive grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

The company will produce and distribute beer from a Mills River facility, along the French Broad River 12 miles south of Asheville. It will include an on-site restaurant. Salaries for the jobs created will vary by function. The brewery is expected to open by early 2014.

Sierra Nevada CEO Ken Grossman said the original brewery in California is reaching capacity as demand for the beer is growing.

“We felt the most responsible thing to do was to build a brewery on the other side of the country, to lessen our impact on the environment while continuing to place great craft beer into the hands of our consumers,” he said. The Mills River location will be the brand's first east of the Mississippi.

My family owns a home in Asheville that we occasionally go to in the fall. Definitely making a trip in 2014.

Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year-old grandson asked if he could say grace.

As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Grandpa gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!"

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!"

Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?"

As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my grand-son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer."

"Really?" my grandson asked.

"Cross my heart," the man replied.

Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life.

He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Shove it up your ass you grouchy old bitch! "

LMAO, like I'm working. It's been nine days since my layoff and I'm already developing cabin fever. I'm getting off this thing for the day, as I have seen the whole internet. I've got about 10 movies we bought and have yet to watch (Hanna and Insidious among them, I've heard they're both excellent) so when I get bored playing God of War I'm going to settle in and do the movie thing. Hell, I may not be back for a day or two, got church in the morning, probably go visit family afterwards and then Monday I think I'm going to spend the day outside doing some long overdue yard work. After that, I don't know what the hell I'm going to do.

Actually I do too, and maybe someone can help me out with it. Apparently a lot of websites are shutting down January 18th to protest the vote on SOPA and PIPA. I need to figure out a way to black this site out that day. Wordpress already has a plugin to do it which will display the reason the site is down and some info on these two bills. Does anyone know of anything like that for Blogger?

Obama to hand Commerce Dept. authority over cybersecurity ID

Something just really bothers me about this one. The article states the program is voluntary, with vendors issuing the id's to consumers to conduct financial transactions online. So why is Obama and his Commerce Dept. getting involved? And how long will it take before a digital id is required to access any site on the web? And how long after that before Commerce (or NSA, DHS, or any other .gov agency) modifies the id's so you can only access state approved websites? You would think that the fights they've had on their hands with Net Neutrality, SOPA and PIPA would teach them to keep their hands off the internet. Apparently not. This is not going to end well.

Not really. I took a layoff at work today, expected to last at least 2-3 weeks. Work has been extremely slow lately, finished one phase of a job several weeks ago, expecting to start another phase of a different job soon and for the most part we show up, wander around looking for something to do and bullshitting for 32 hours a week so I'm kinda glad to be taking the layoff. Of course I can draw unemployment while I'm out and will probably make more by doing so than I would actually going to work for that short amount of time, plus I'll save $40 a week on fuel. There's a few things I've been needing to take care of so I may not post for a few weeks, but I will be back and probably have quite a bit to share. In the meantime, since this lass seems to be quite popular......

THE US State Department said yesterday that congress had released $US40 million ($38.4m) in aid to the Palestinians, part of the nearly $200m frozen over their bid for full UN recognition.

The monies will be utilised for economic and humanitarian support. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked congress in October to preserve the aid to the Palestinian Authority, warning that Hamas militants could otherwise fill the void.

During the UN General Assembly in September, the Palestinians sought full UN membership. They need nine votes out of 15 in the Security Council, but the US vowed to veto the bid, saying the route to statehood was through negotiations with Israel.

Oh wait, I forgot. The PLO, Hamas, Hezbollah, Taliban, Muslim Brotherhood, Fatah, Holy Land Foundation, PLF and the PIJ are no longer considered terrorists or our enemies. Religious Freedom: As our nation celebrates Christmas, Christians in the nations we shed blood and treasure for to establish democracy face extinction. For Christians in Iraq and Afghanistan, it may be the last Christmas ever.

Christianity faces the threat of actual extinction in Iraq and Afghanistan as a consequence of systematic, sustained and sometimes violent persecution, according to the chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

According to USCIRF head Leonard Leo in an interview with CNSNews.com, the Iraqi government has not taken adequate steps to protect Christians or prosecute those who attack them. The precipitate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and the return of sectarian violence may leave Iraqi Christians in the cross hairs of Iraqi extremists.

"I'm very, very concerned about what will happen after our presence is completely gone," Leo said, "and I don't know how we continue to put pressure on the Iraqi government and on the security forces and others in Iraq to protect the Christians in the absence of any presence."

Persecution of and violence against Christians in Iraq has caused a modern-day exodus. "Half or more of the pre-2003 Iraqi Christian community is believed to have left the country, with Christian leaders warning that the consequence of this flight may be the end of Christianity in Iraq," USCIRF said in its annual report.

"In 2003, there were thought to be 800,000 to 1.4 million Chaldean Catholics, Assyrian Orthodox, Assyrian Church of the East members, Syriac Orthodox, Armenians (Catholic and Orthodox), Protestants and Evangelicals in Iraq. Today, community leaders estimate the number of Christians to be around 50,000."

For Christians in Iraq, Christmas 2011 was indeed a silent night as Christmas celebrations were subdued lest they provoke a repeat of an October attack on Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad in which 68 people were murdered, including two priests. The Islamic State of Iraq, an al-Qaida-linked group, took credit for that attack and vowed a campaign of violence against Christians wherever they are.

The Iraqi church bombing was followed by a series of targeted attacks on Christian homes by bombers who clearly knew every Christian address. Christians were also shot to death in Baghdad and Mosul, while 70 Christian students were injured by a roadside bomb attack on a convoy of buses taking them to a university in Mosul.

USCIRF has asked the State Department to officially name Iraq as a "country of particular concern" for the lack of religious freedom there. But the State Department, concerned these days with the rights of gays and lesbians abroad, has declined to do so.

US alarmed by violence in Egypt

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration pressed its concerns Wednesday with Egyptian officials over the ongoing violence and abuse of female demonstrators in Egypt.

The State Department said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had spoken by phone a day earlier to Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri to register deep U.S. unease about the situation, particularly well-documented attacks on women participating in anti-military protests by security forces. The conversation came after Clinton earlier this week bluntly called the treatment of the women a "disgrace" that dishonored this year's revolution that ended decades of repressive rule.

Why just Egypt? What about Palestine, Africa, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan? And why just women? What about the Christians, Jews, Hindis and Buddhists being persecuted?

Those useless idiots in D.C. are shocked that females in Egypt are being abused. Imagine how they'd feel if they got their intel from someone other than HuffPo.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Police searched for multiple suspects Tuesday after a gunbattle in a parking lot where a rap music video was being filmed left seven people wounded, including a 1-year-old boy who was shot in the head.

The gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. Monday as about 20 people gathered outside a west Oakland liquor store, police said. The victims were transported to local hospitals by others at the scene before officers arrived.

The toddler, a man and a woman were critically injured, Police Chief Howard Jordan said. The remaining victims — all males — sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

"This was a pretty heinous act that took place in our city," Jordan said, asking any witnesses to come forward with information. "This should not be tolerated by this community."

Garner, NC - Students of all ages often communicate through texting and social media. Some educators say those abbreviated thought bursts, void of punctuation or capitalization, mixed with numbers and symbols are impacting how students write.

Dena Nealy, who teaches language arts at East Garner Middle School, said she is seeing text message abbreviations have become a huge issue. She said she is seeing the letters “LOL,” which stand for “laugh out loud,” in students' work. However, the informal language of texting presents teachable moments, she said.

“When it comes to a classroom or professional writing, any type of professional or professional assignment, you need to learn to turn it off,” Nealy said

Julie Hoyes, who runs the Sylvan Learning Center in Garner, said she sees students writing the letters “UR” to represent the word “your.”

“Students need to be taught the differences between texting and writing an essay,” Hoyes said.

Hoyes is seeing a rise in spelling mistakes and sentence fragments in her tutoring.

Eighth grade student Stone Pearce admits that he has to be careful when writing.

“I put like 'UR' for your, and then I caught myself and was like, ‘What am I doing?’” he said

Borepatch ran an article about a Marriott affiliated Casa Monica hotel in St. Augustine Florida firing an employee for wearing an American flag lapel pin that has apparently gone viral with bloggers. While I wholeheartedly agree that this was a dick move on Kessler Enterprises part, I also acknowledge they were doing nothing more than enforcing the dress code set out in their employee handbook. Company policy clearly states 'No other buttons, badges, pins or insignias of any kind are permitted to be worn.'

Sean May violated company policy, plain and simple. He could have complied with the policy by removing his lapel pin. He chose not to. The company terminated his employment for his refusal to comply. I know, I'm an asshole, but rules are rules. We don't have to like them, we just have to abide by them.

If you're a parent who accepts Medicaid payments from the State of Michigan to help support your mentally-disabled adult children, you qualify as a state employee for the purposes of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). They can now claim and receive a portion of your Medicaid in the form of union dues.

Robert and Patricia Haynes live in Michigan with their two adult children, who have cerebral palsy. The state government provides the family with insurance through Medicaid, but also treats them as caregivers. For the SEIU, this makes them public employees and thus members of the union, which receives $30 out of the family's monthly Medicaid subsidy. The Michigan Quality Community Care Council (MQC3) deducts union dues on behalf of SEIU.

Michigan Department of Community Health Director Olga Dazzo explained the process in to her members of her staff. "MQC3 basically runs the program for SEIU and passes the union dues from the state to the union," she wrote in an email obtained by the Mackinac Center. Initiated in 2006 under then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm, D-Mich., the plan reportedly provides the SEIU with $6 million annually in union dues deducted from those Medicaid subsidies.

“We're not even home health care workers. We're just parents taking care of our kids,” Robert Haynes, a retired Detroit police officer, told the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. “Our daughter is 34 and our son is 30. They have cerebral palsy. They are basically like 6-month-olds in adult bodies. They need to be fed and they wear diapers. We could sure use that $30 a month that's being sent to the union.”

According to the Mackinac Center, the theoretical public employer for whom the Haynes' work is the Michigan Quality Community Care Council (MQC3), an entity within the DCH that continues to operate, even though the state legislature has defunded it. Even the MQC3 calls the families hiring in-home health care providers "employers of providers," but these health care providers are also treated as employers of MQC3 when it comes time each month to take dues out of their Medicaid payment and send it to the SEIU.

Mr. and Mrs. Haynes, of course, are both the parents (the employer) and the health care providers for their children, but they still lose money to the SEIU every month, despite having no interest in joining the union. They have been arbitrarily classified as state employees so that the union can take money from them.

Gov. Rick Snyder, R-Mich., already ended a similar scheme to provide unions with new "public employees" in the area of child care. His predecessor, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, D-Mich., had classified in-home daycare providers as public employees -- a designation that forced them to pay union dues but conferred no other benefits upon them. Snyder's director of the Department of Human Services ended that program. "[We] will stop all funding and, because these providers are not state employees, will also cease collecting union dues,” DHS director Maura Corrigan said at the time.

Michigan's state House has already passed a bill to prevent this sort of rent-seeking by public-sector unions, but it has stalled in the state Senate.

Union influence in Michigan? Unheard of.

Federal spending records show the U.S. Secret Service approved a purchase order on Nov. 2 to pay Mr. Biden $26,400 for agents to stay at a cottage on lakefront property he owns in Delaware.

Edwin M. Donovan, special agent in charge at the Secret Service's Office of Public Affairs in Washington, said Mr. Biden isn’t receiving all that money at once. Instead, he said, the purchase order shows plans by the Secret Service to pay Mr. Biden $2,200 per month for another year.

In other words, Mr. Biden isn’t raising the rent.

Layoff notices are being handed out across CNN/U.S. today. Photographers, editors and other staffers in Atlanta, New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Miami are being let go. CNN Senior VP Jack Womack writes in a note to staff that the cuts come after a 3-year analysis of the company’s work processes.

WASHINGTON — With the stroke of his pen, President Barack Obama has sacked souvenirs federal agencies buy with taxpayer money to promote their work.

The ban he signed Wednesday is part of a broader executive order to cut some $4 billion of dollars in waste and make government more efficient. Some office equipment will simply be scarcer, and fewer cell phones and laptops will be issued.

Obama has been using his executive powers on modest proposals — Wednesday's order targets trinkets like coffee cups, T-shirts and pens — to promote job creation, help homeowners or, in this case, redirect spending.

With such orders, signed in Oval Office ceremonies, Obama is trying to demonstrate that he is engaged in measures large and small and to distinguish himself from what he argues is a pretty unproductive Congress. Lawmakers are in the middle of a more gargantuan task — cutting deficits by at least $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years.

How much, exactly, did State pay for Obumblers book to stock libraries and give as gifts to people who wouldn't piss on him if he were on fire? How much were Chewie's lavish vacations? How much taxpayer dollars are pissed away every time he hits the links? Or one of those star studded parties at the White House? Fucking hypocrite. Live within our means? AUSTIN, TEXAS — Texas Gov. Rick Perry says America should extend work visas to allow illegal immigrants to move freely between the U.S. and their home countries — but opposes a path to citizenship.

The Republican presidential candidate told CNN's John King on Thursday that expecting authorities to arrest and deport millions of illegal immigrants isn't realistic. He added, however, that other Republicans, including former President George W. Bush, went too far by proposing a path to citizenship.

He didn't elaborate on what a work visa program might look like and said it can only happen if the federal government first secures America's southern border.

Perry also repeated his opposition to a fence running the length of that border, saying it wouldn't work and would take 10 to 15 years to build.

He wants illegal aliens to be able to work in this country freely and be able to travel back and forth to their native countries with no restrictions. He doesn't want to deport illegal aliens violating federal law. He doesn't want to secure the Southern border.

ORLANDO, FLA. — A federal judge temporarily blocked Florida's new law that requires welfare applicants to pass a drug test before receiving benefits on Monday, saying it may violate the Constitution's ban on unreasonable searches and seizures.

Judge Mary Scriven ruled in response to a lawsuit filed on behalf of a 35-year-old Navy veteran and single father who sought the benefits while finishing his college degree, but refused to take the test. The judge said there was a good chance plaintiff Luis Lebron would succeed in his challenge to the law based on the Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals from being unfairly searched.

The drug test can reveal a host of private medical facts about the individual, Scriven wrote, adding that she found it "troubling" that the drug tests are not kept confidential like medical records. The results can also be shared with law enforcement officers and a drug abuse hotline.

"This potential interception of positive drug tests by law enforcement implicates a 'far more substantial' invasion of privacy than in ordinary civil drug testing cases," Scriven said.

So, I'm subjected to a pre-employment drug screen and that's Constitutional. I may be subjected to random drug tests, and if I hurt myself on the job I have to take a drug test and that's Constitutional. For some jackass to have to take a drug test in order to receive some of the tax dollars I pay into the system is un-Constitutional?!? There was a time when I didn't particularly concern myself with local or national politics. There was a time when I didn't pay attention to what was going on half a world away. There was a time when I was content to work 60 hours a week to provide for my family, and spend my off time on trivial pursuits that entertained only me. That time is long gone.

I still work 48-56 hours a week to provide for my family. We may not have everything we want, but we have what we need. The big difference is before, I spent my leisure time trying to sight in a scope to turn a rifle into a tack driver at 175 yards, or trying to tune the timing on an MSD distributor to get my Mach 1 running just right. Now? I read. I spend almost every waking, non-working minute reading and learning. About what? Government. And the more I learn, the more I wish I'd never started reading in the first place.

But read I have, and a sad and wiser person I have become. Hopefully some of the ranting and raving I've done here on this blog has sparked the curiosity of at least one person who went on to dig for the truth themselves. For my part, I'll continue emailing my congresswoman and senator and state reps and senators and demanding they do the job my taxes are paying them to do, and posting the idiocy I come across on the internet concerning our federal government and hoping someone out there gets as pissed as I am about what's going on in the Capitol nowadays.
